Origin story:
Prior to the infamous Cybertronian Civil War, Ultra Magnus served under Chief Justice Tyrest, helping maintain and enforce the laws of Cybertronian civilization. When the war began, Magnus' strong morals and sense of judgement led him to immediately side with Optimus Prime, gaining significant renown as a warrior and quickly rising to become one of the highest ranking officers in the Autobot ranks. When war eventually destroyed their homeworld, and Ultra Magnus joined his fellow Autobots in the exodus from their home planet, continuing to fight against the Decepticon forces throughout the cosmos.
As the war spread to the far reaches of space, Ultra Magnus continued working for Tyrest hunting down the more notorious criminals amongst the Decepticons. He eventually became the commanding officer of a number of Autobot teams whose jobs usually entailed high risk missions. Ultra Magnus led some of the war's most significant battles, many of which nearly led to his death at the hands of Megatron's forces (and started a number of rumors that the lawman was immortal).
Recently, Magnus has been assisting a team of Autobots in the vicinity of Earth. Having picked up an unusual energy spike heading toward Cybertron (caused by the return of Unicron), and having lost contact with Optimus Prime and his team in the area, Ultra Magnus left his squad to investigate on his own.
Personality:
Ultra Magnus is the very definition of a 'by the book' soldier. A lawman first and foremost, Magnus will do everything in his power to ensure that rules and regulations are in place and followed to the mark. He's extremely particular and detail oriented, to the point of being obsessive, much to the chagrin of those under his command. He takes his job incredibly seriously and is an extreme workaholic, rarely taking time to relax. Ultra Magnus has virtually no sense of humor, and responds poorly to jokes and wisecracks.
His strength and abilities in the field make him an excellent fighter, and this combined with his intelligence and organizational skills have made him indispensable to the Autobot cause. Though he has been serving as a commander for some time, Magnus sees himself more as a soldier than a leader, and would rather follow orders than be the one giving them.
Magnus has a good memory for names and faces, and tends to evaluate people based on their actions and possible transgressions. In general, he is extremely critical of people and has a tendency to assume anyone has the potential to become a criminal. While Ultra Magnus attempts to remain impartial and unattached, he can be very protective of his crew and teammates, and will take every precaution to ensure everyone's safety to the best of his ability. Like Optimus Prime, Ultra Magnus dislikes unnecessary violence and risk, especially when it is the result of faulty decision making or leadership. Recently, Magnus has taken some effort to be more personable, with limited success.
Differences from canon: Is only about 15', for one thing. Also is probably not actually a small robot inside a larger robot.

In order to ensure that we are properly prepared for any new Decepticon threat, I have elected to investigate the phenomena myself. I assure you I will be taking all necessary precaution and following proper protocol, and hopefully avoid falling into the same situation as our commander. I have assigned command to High Brow in my absence, he should be more than capable of leading the forces under my command until I am able to return to my previous assignment.
I will be arriving at your location shortly. In keeping with protocol, I would be happy to offer a debrief concerning the activity of my squadron in the Zeta Nexus. It would also be prudent to review any intel your team as acquired regarding the energy source Optimus Prime left to investigate prior to his untimely disappearance. Any information your team has gathered regarding Optimus Prime's current whereabouts would also be significant to my investigation.
I have also heard rumors of Decepticon activity in the area. I understand you embarked on this mission with a small team, and should you require further support you need only give the order. I will re-prioritize my current mission to offer assistance should it be necessary.
